This is not meant to be a comprehensive study of anything, but rather an anecdote which the reader can follow up according to his own needs.
I recently had the occasion to search for a record for a Herzog from the Polish town of Chorzele, a few miles north of Przanysk. The records are in the archives in Plock and can be found in JRI-Poland.
I use the legacy version of their search, so I put the surname and town name in their search form, using the default conditions.
The results surprised me.
Nothing at all from the archives. So I tried changing the "search type" for the surname from "phonetically like" to "sounds like," using the dropdown menu
so the search looked like thisand these were the results.
Sixty results, 58 from Chorzele (Plock) and two more from nearby Lomza.
I have seen this kind of thing before which is why I usually go straight to "sounds like."
The Search Type options "Fuzzy," "Fuzzier" and "Fuzziest" produced no results.
There is no deep analysis or implied criticism here, just my own experience.
Have a nice day.
Good tips! And I realized it's been too long since I looked at JRI-Poland, so I did, but I have yet to review all the results I got.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for taking the time to share this with us. I have had no luck at all with JRI-Poland and thought I searched this way but will go back and try again with this in mind. I appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tip!
